Low levels of genetic diversity depicted from mitochondrial DNA sequences in a heavily exploited marine fish (Cynoscion acoupa, Sciaenidae) from the Northern coast of Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rodrigues,Rosa; Schneider,Horacio; Santos,Simôni; Vallinoto,Marcelo; Sain-Paul,Ulrich; Sampaio,Iracilda.
The acoupa weakfish (Cynoscion acoupa - Sciaenidae) is a marine species of croaker with estuarine-dependent behavior, found in the western Atlantic from Panama to Argentina. It is one of the most exploited food fish on the northern coast of Brazil. In this study, DNA sequences were determined from the entire control region (D-loop) of the mitochondrial genome of 297 individuals collected during seven different months between December 2003 and August 2005 on the northern coast of Brazil (Amapá and Pará). Genetic variability expressed by haplotype (h = 0,892) and nucleotide (pi = 0,003) diversities were low compared to other heavily exploited marine fish species from the western Atlantic and eastern Asia. AMOVA depicted a lack of genetic structuring among...

5S rDNA characterization in twelve Sciaenidae fish species (Teleostei, Perciformes): depicting gene diversity and molecular markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Alves-Costa,Fernanda A.; Martins,Cesar; Matos,Fernanda Del Campos de; Foresti,Fausto; Oliveira,Claudio; Wasko,Adriane P..
In order to extend the genetic data on the Sciaenidae fish family, the present study had the purpose to characterize PCR-generated 5S rDNA repeats of twelve species of this group through PAGE (Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) analysis. The results showed the occurrence of at least two different 5S rDNA size classes in all the species. Moreover, 5S rDNA repeats of one of the studied species - Isopisthus parvipinnis - were cloned and subjected to nucleotide sequencing and Southern blot membrane hybridization analyses, which permitted to confirm the existence of two major 5S rDNA classes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequences of different 5S rDNA repeats of I. parvipinnis lead to their separation into two major clusters. These results may...

Genetic differentiation of Macrodon ancylodon (Sciaenidae, Perciformes) populations in Atlantic coastal waters of South America as revealed by mtDNA analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Simôni; Schneider,Horacio; Sampaio,Iracilda.
The king weakfish (pescada-gó in Portuguese - Macrodon ancylodon (Sciaenidae), a demersal (bottom-feeding) species found in South America Atlantic coastal waters from the Gulf of Paria in Venezuela to Baia Blanca in Argentina, is an economically important species because of its abundance and wide acceptance by consumers. Because of its wide distribution this fish may be subject to geographic isolation and this may have resulted in distinct populations along its coastal range. Considering that this species represents an important economic resource, confirmation of whether M. ancylodon is a single species or there are different genetic stocks spread over its wide distribution would be an important contribution to conservation policies and population...

Sciaenidae fish of the Caeté River estuary, Northern Brazil: mitochondrial DNA suggests explosive radiation for the Western Atlantic assemblage Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vinson,Christina; Gomes,Grazielle; Schneider,Horacio; Sampaio,Iracilda.
Sciaenids are fish which are normally abundant in tropical estuaries of the western Atlantic. Studies on the Caeté river estuary in the northern Brazilian state of Pará have revealed that in this area Sciaenidae is the dominant family, comprising almost 50% of all teleosts sampled. In this paper we present the results of the first phylogenetic study on South American estuarine sciaenids, during which we obtained mitochondrial gene 16S sequences from 15 species belonging to eight genera occurring in the Caeté estuary. Intergeneric nucleotide divergences varied from 5 to 15%, Lonchurus and Menticirrhus being the most divergent lineages. Nucleotide divergences were quite variable amongst species of the same genus, ranging from 1.2% (Stellifer microps x...

The complete mitochondrial genome of the small yellow croaker and partitioned Bayesian analysis of Sciaenidae fish phylogeny Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cheng,Yuanzhi; Wang,Rixin; Sun,Yuena; Xu,Tianjun.
To understand the phylogenetic position of Larimichthys polyactis within the family Sciaenidae and the phylogeny of this family, the organization of the mitochondrial genome of small yellow croaker was determined herein. The complete, 16,470 bp long, mitochondrial genome contains 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding, 2 ribosomal RNA and 22 transfer RNA genes), as well as a control region (CR), as in other bony fishes. Comparative analysis of initiation/termination codon usage in mitochondrial protein-coding genes of Percoidei species, indicated that COI in Sciaenidae entails an ATG/AGA codon usage different from other Percoidei fishes, where absence of a typical conserved domain or motif in the control regions is common. Partitioned Bayesian analysis...

Food consumption of fish in a sub-tropical SW Atlantic ecosystem off Brazil: comparison of four Sciaenid species ArchiMer
Soares, Lsh.
The first evaluations of the daily ration and population food consumption of four Sciaenid fish, under natural conditions for the Brazilian south-western Atlantic shelf (23degrees35'S, 45degrees00'W) are presented. The average daily ration ranged from 4.38 to 12.92 % body mass (90% confidence interval) for the juvenile shortfin corvina (Isopisthus parvipinnis), from 0.41 to 5.52 % body mass (90% confidence interval) for the juvenile shorthead drum (Larimus breviceps) and from 3.14% to 3.15% body mass for the juvenile whitemouth croacker (Micropogonias furnieri). Juveniles of the banded croacker (Paralonchurus brasiliensis) showed higher estimates (2.58-2.60% body mass) than those for the adults (1.2-1.84% body mass). The mean food consumption rate of the...

Maturation and spawning of tropical and subtropical marine finfish by environmental manipulations ArchiMer
Roberts Jr, D.
Circannual, diel, and lunal periodic mechanisms in naturally reproducing stocks of tropical and subtropical fishes are reviewed. Manipulations of biological clocks, used to control reproduction in captive broodstocks, are detailed. Experiments to induce controlled maturation and spawning in fishes either test efficacy of changing environmental conditions (regimes), or constant environmental conditions (controlled). Data have been generated in experimental/scientific studies, as well as applied research. Effects of controlled environmental regimes on serum steroids, gametogenesis, spawning, fry performance and egg quality are summarized for selected members of Centropomidae, Serranidae, and Sciaenidae.

Trophic ecology of commercial-size meagre, Argyrosomus regius, in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) ArchiMer
Hubans, Barbara; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Begout, Marie-laure; Biais, Gerard; Bustamante, Paco; Ducci, Lillian; Mornet, Francoise; Boiron, Anne; Coupeau, Yann; Spitz, Jerome.
In the north-eastern Atlantic, meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is one of the largest fish living on the shelf and this species has important commercial interest. Over the past two decades, large variations in meagre abundance have been observed with pluri-annual cycles but the factors involved in such variations are still unclear. Trophic interactions between meagre and other species (both prey and competitors) might be one explanatory variable of the observed variations in meagre recruitment and abundance. In the present study, we described the diet of commercial-size meagre in the Bay of Biscay from stomach content and stable isotope analyses, and explored its dietary ontogeny. We found that commercial-size meagres were mostly piscivorous with a diet...

Length measurements on Pseudotolithus elongatus ' samples from the Congo were recorded in the 60s. Subsamples were collected in order to be "aged" by otoliths' reading. The size frequency distributions were splitted into successive unimodal distributions by different methods. Their results were compared. The results obtained from the "successive maximums' method" were similar to those from the "otoliths' reading." The programs NORMSEP and MIX gave results far more difficult to interpret biologically speaking in spite of their mathematical quality. Because many length frequency distributions of a cohort are symmetrical in nature, we suggest applying the "successive maximums' method"if there is no evidence of normality

Plasma ion levels of freshwater and marine/estuarine teleosts from Southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Gonçalves,Jamile Fabbrin; Toledo,Jaderson dos Anjos; Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Vieira,João Paes; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The purpose of this study was to investigate Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ levels in the plasma of freshwater and marine/estuarine teleosts collected at different salinities (0 to 34) from the estuarine and freshwater portions of the São Gonçalo channel in Southern Brazil. Any relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity and the capacity of ionic regulation of teleosts found at three or more different salinities (Genidens barbus and Micropogonias furnieri) was also investigated. Results showed no relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity when considering all species together, but the two species collected from three or more different salinities showed a significant positive relationship between plasma ion levels and salinity, indicating...

Spatial, seasonal and ontogenetic changes in food resource use by a piscivore fish in two Pantanal lagoons, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Gimenes,Michele de Faveri; Fugi,Rosemara; Isaac,Andréia; Silva,Marlene Rodrigues da.
We evaluated the factors that affect the food resource use by Plagioscion ternetzi using three approaches: spatial, seasonal, and ontogenetic changes. Fish were sampled between March 2000 and February 2001 and March 2003 and February 2004 in the Sinhá Mariana and Chacororé lagoons, wetlands of the Pantanal Matogrossense. Fish was the predominant food in the diet, but shrimps and insects have been also consumed. The diet of P. ternetzi was significantly different between lagoons, but no difference was detected between dry and flood periods. In Sinhá Mariana lagoon, the diet mainly consisted of Psectrogaster curviventris, in both periods. In the flood period in Chacororé lagoon, fish was the dominant food (especially Astyanax spp., Leporinus spp. and...

Species Diversity and Relative Abundance of Fisheries Resources Found in Beach Seine along the Central Coast of Ghana OceanDocs
Aggrey-Fynn, J.; Sackey-Mensah, R..
The diversity and relative species abundance of fisheries resources were studied from Winneba to Cape Coast on the central coast of Ghana during December 2007 to May 2009. Samples of organisms were collected at random from beach seine landings during the study period. The fishes were counted and identified to the family and species levels. Ecological indices such as Shannon-Wiener diversity index, equitability and Sørenson’s similarity index were used to analyse the data. Specimens from Winneba, Saltpond and Cape Coast comprise 56 species belonging to 30 families. Carangidae, Haemulidae, Clupeidae and Sciaenidae were some of the families, where key species occurred during the study. The relative abundance of key organisms in the beach seine landings...

The differential effects of changing management regimes on yields from two fisheries exploiting the same resources OceanDocs
Djama, Theodore; Pitcher, T.J..
A yield per recruit model has been used to compare the effects of mesh size increment on the yields and revenues of the fisheries of Cameroon under two different cases. Case 1 assumes the commercial fishery to move from the exploitation of three age-groups to two age-groups with no interactions with the artisanal fishery, whereas Case 2 takes into account these interactions. The difference in the percentage increase of yield per recruit between case 1 and case 2 is 61% at current fishing (46% and 18% yield per recruit increment in cases 1 and 2 respectively). The usually accepted long-term yield per recruit increment with increase of age at first capture (with a single non-interacting fisheries) is, in this case, cancelled out. However, the revenues...

Reprodução de Stellifer rastrifer (Jordan) (Teleostei, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
A total of 1312 individuais of S. rastrifer were sampled from March 1994 to September 1996 at the Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazilian coast. This species is a permanently inhabitant of the mangrove area throughout the year. The weight/length relationship of the species in the region is "In TW =-12,35 + 3,22 In TL", and the individuais may reach 172mm of total length. The analyses of gonadal morphology and gonadossomatic index indicate that S. rastrifer is a multiple spawner species, that reproduces at the mangrove area during a long period of the year. The reproductive activity is more intense during the winter and mainly the spring, when the value of Condition Factor declines and empty folheies are found in the ovaries.

Bairdiella ronchus is one of the most common species of demersal ichthyofauna in Guaratuba Bay, south Brazil. However, this study reveals that is does not inhabits permanently the mangroove area. Individuals with more than 94mm total lenght leave mangroove area in late summer and early auntumn and returming in the spring. when they start ovarian veitellogenesis. During late spring and early summer, the oocytes are hydrated, and empty follicles can be found in the ovaries, indicating that this is the reproductive time for this species As other Sciaenidae.
A survey performed in the Guaratuba Bay (25º52'S; 48º39'W) and the adjacent marine area has provided additional data about the habits of the croaker in the southern coast of Brazil. A dynamic pattern of movements along the marine and estuarine waters was observed, but it does not indicate spawning activity in the study area. During autumn/winter, pre-adults and adults use the marine waters. In spring/summer, following gonadal maturation, the individuals leave this area and probably move to deeper waters, where they spawn. Until the end of summer, the estuary is then occupied by juveniles coming from the marine spawning area. In autumn/winter, these juveniles and the new pre-adults move to the marine zone adjacent to the bay and begin gonadal maturation. It...
